Thursday Aug 29, 2019
Surprise! A fresh new Creator Talks an interview conducted in person at Big Dog’s Brewing Company with Derek Hunter (Disney animation designer for Duck Tales) and Jason Young (architect of I Hate Fairy Land), creators of Pretty Violent (Image Comics).
Derek and Jason were in Las Vegas for a signing August 24th2019 at the Maximum Comics at the Centennial Hills location.
Before heading off to the signing, we talked about creating Pretty Violent and what has been the fan reaction.
Also I discuss their other work, Derek and Jason's Pirate Club and Derek's early autobiography Derek Hunter is a F___!
Jason talks about his involved in I Hate Fairy Land with Scottie Young.
Plus: what lessons did they find out about making comics the hard way, and what did they learn that from someone that was invaluable advice. We still have time for Kicking Back With The Creator Questions.
Note: Due to technical issues the external microphones we used failed to pick up our voices, however the built in recorder's microphone did. There is a good bit of background buzz and chatter, more than I would like, but with added audio enhancement the conversation is now audible.

Carlos Giffoni and John Doe on Strayed (Dark Horse)
Thursday Aug 08, 2019
Thursday Aug 08, 2019
Carlos Giffoni is a musician and game producer whose first creator-owned comic Strayed (Dark Horse) hits comic shops on August 21st 2019.
The artist on the series is Juan Doe (Descendent, Dark Ark) a veteran in the comic book industry.
What is Strayed all about? The Diamond solicit reads:
In the far future, a military-industrial complex reigns over all humanity and actively destroys distant alien worlds. The galaxy's only hope can be found through an unlikely pair: an astral-projecting cat named Lou and his loving owner Kiara. Trading nine lives for the well being of billions, their revolt is a battle for love, friendship, compassion, and the soul of humanity.
Carlos tells us about a decommissioned government project that sparked his idea of a sci-fi story that features an astral-projecting cat. It doesn’t hurt that he owns a couple of cats too.
Juan talks about the joy of collaborating on Strayed with Carlos. Also, Juan tells us about the unusual path he took to illustrating comics and why he chose the pen name is Juan Doe.
We open our conversation talking about the California earthquake in July that impacted both Carlos and me. Since Carlos lives in California, earthquakes are not usual for him. Even Juan has experienced his share. How do they cope?
Plus, when I Kick Back With the Creators and ask my fun questions which includes what was their oddest job.
Juan surprises us again with a job neither of would have ever guessed!

Special Edition! TwoMorrows Publishing has launched a KickStarter to make a second printing of American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1980s.
John Morrow joins Creator Talk's for a Creator Corner feature to explain why the publisher decided to take the Kickstarter route for a second printing of the sold out 1980s volume of the world's greatest comic book history encyclopedia.
The 1980s volume covers comics published year by year placing within historical context and does extensive research to include the stories behind the making of the comics.
Other volumes of American Comic Book Chronicles , which cover the 1940s through the 1990s, are available only at certain Kickstarter pledge levels, while supplies last.
The campaign was fully funded in just the first two days and top tier pledge levels have already sold out!
My advice if you are interested in pledging? Act fast.
Ever wonder which era of comics is John Morrows' favorite? And why? Since this is Creator Talks, I ask!

Karl Kesel discusses just some of the indelible marks he has made upon the comic book industry throughout his long and illustrious career.
Along with his collaborator Tom Grummet, Karl created Kon-El Superboy, wrote a land mark issue of the Fantastic Four inspired by a Jack Kirby drawing of The Thing and returned Daredevil to being a swashbuckling hero!
How did it all begin for Karl? Why did he decide to become an inker and who his favorite inker of all time?
What were the first comics he read and which artist does he admire for the impact he made on himself and the entire comic industry in the early 1970?
But that’s not all! We talk about the success of his Section Zero Kickstarters with Tom Grummet and his latest project with David Hahn (Six Million Dollar Man, Batman 66) titled Impossible Jones.
And in the Kicking Back With The Creator segment, I discover Karl’s favorite way to rest and relax, his specialty dish and about the dinner parties hosted for comic book living legends.
